As you may or may not have heard due to recent incidents
with drowning and disembowelment, U.S. Congress & President Bush signed into law
the “Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act of 2007” on December
19, 2007. This new
mandatory federal law will have some new requirements to have and operate
any commercial pool. We are writing this letter to inform you about some
of changes that will be effective December 20, 2008.

Some of the
Requirements
listed in the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act of 2007: |

First, ALL commercial
pools (new & existing) will be required to have a drain cover that meets the new
“American National Standard ASME A112.19.8 – 2007”. This means 99.9% of all the
existing drain covers will not meet the new requirement and will have to be
replaced to operate a commercial pool after December 20, 2008.
These drain
covers will have an approximate cost of:
$18.95 each for
Hayward 8" round
covers
$92.95 each for Hayward 12” x 12” square covers
Hayward 18” x 18” square covers will also be changing but pricing will not be
available until Nov 2008.
Note: All other brands
will have pricing information to come at a later date. |
|

We will be offering diving
service to install these at
$150/hr (normally only
takes 1 hr). |
| |
|
Secondly, some commercial pools (new & existing) will be required to
have a “Safety Vacuum Release System”
(SVRS). Basically this device will release suction on the main
drain(s) if it is blocked for any reason. Pools equipped with
gravity drainage system, automatic pump shut off, or other system
determined by the CPSC to equally effective. We
will be offering two different versions of the system a mechanical
version made by Vac-Alert and an electronic version made by Hayward
Pool Products. The electronic version may save costs in the
installation costs.
